Nirbhaya's mother appeals to SC, Center to execute the convicts immediately

Nirbhaya's mother on Thursday appealed to the Supreme Court and the central government to execute the convicts immediately. Her comments came in the context of the decision of the Supreme Court to hear the petition for review by one of the convicted Akshay Kumar Singh in the 2012 group rape case on December 17.

New Delhi: Nirbhaya's mother said Thursday that she appealed to the Supreme Court and the central government to execute the convicted immediately.

Two and a half years have passed since the Supreme Court approved the order on his sentence and 18 months since the petitions for review were dismissed. I have asked the court and the government to hang them immediately, Asha Devi told Media.

Her comments came in the context of the decision of the Supreme Court to hear the petition for review by one of the convicted Akshay Kumar Singh in the 2012 group rape case on December 17.

The court should listen to the petition for review, but the request should have been rejected earlier. We have no choice but to accept the decision of the Supreme Court, she said.

We have been fighting for seven years, Devi said, adding that the court must announce the date of his execution soon.

She said the promises of fast-track courts and the installation of CCTV cameras that were made in 2012 have not yet been fulfilled.

In 2012, several of those promises were made. Fast track courts have been made, but no one questions the lack of availability of judges in them.

Her daughter, a paramedic student, was kidnapped and killed on December 16, 2012, by six men. All defendants were arrested and charged with murder.

One of the defendants was a minor and appeared before a juvenile justice court, while another defendant committed suicide. The rest of the convicts face the gallows.

The higher court had confirmed the death penalty for the four men in 2017.

One of the convicts, Vinay, filed a petition for mercy last month but has now tried to withdraw it.
