Media commenting on sub judice matters is causing damage: Attorney General tells SC

The Attorney General of India on Tuesday expressed concern over the media trails as he went on to inform the apex court about how the issue of a sub judice matter being commented freely by the media is damaging the institution.

New Delhi: Attorney General of India, K K Venugopal, told the Supreme Court on Tuesday that issue of a sub judice matter being commented freely by the media needs to be looked into as it is causing great damage to the institution.

A bench comprising of Justices AM Khanwilkar, BR Gavai and Krishna Murari were hearing a contempt case of Advocate Prashant Bhushan over an interview given by him to Tehelka back in 2009.

The question of laws have to be decided in the matter pertaining to contempt. During the hearing, AG remarked that the media these days freely comments on the pending matters trying to influence the judges and public perception which is causing a great damage.

There are comments about the bail application based on statements to be made to the police, added AG. He also cited an example of Rafael on how on the day of the case there were articles commenting over it.

Advocates told the court that they will meet and decide the questions of laws to be argued before the top court.

The matter has been adjourned to the first week of November.
