Odd-even concept in Delhi

New Delhi: Bahut Sonkar Shastri, the Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson alleged that Delhi chief minister is discussing the 'odd-even' concept in Delhi, only to stay in news.

'Kejriwal is trying to be in news'

Talking to ETV Bharat, he said, "The previously introduced odd-even concept for vehicular movement on Delhi roads was also rejected, as it did not contribute much to reduce pollution as claimed. Kerjriwal is now trying to be in news by discussing odd-even issue once again. New Motor Vehicle law is made and implemented for people's betterment. Some states have accepted and some have even rejected it as they do not wish to follow it in a hurry."

The Delhi government is seeking legal opinion before issuing notification on the new Motor Vehicle Amendment (MVA) Bill 2019 issued by the Center.

The Transport Department had said that it is necessary to get approval from Lt. Governor Anil Baijal before issuing the notification.

The department sent the file to Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot. But the Transport Minister has rejected it outright citing the decision of the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court is in favour of the Delhi government.

Meanwhile, though the MVA Act came into force on September 1, many states have decided not to adopt the stricter rules straight away, with some even slashing the fines decided by the Centre.

According to a senior official of the transport department, the Delhi government has every right to reduce the penalty imposed by the central government.

But at present, the government is taking legal opinion about implementing the decision of the center.

Regarding the Motor Vehicle (MV) Act of the central government, the Delhi government has already approved the bill by sending a letter to the Special Commissioner of Transport Police, Traffic Police.

The new MV Act 2019 replaced the MV Act 1988. It has increased the punishment for traffic rules violations.
