Polling underway at JNU for student body elections

Voting for Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union poll is underway on Friday after the University witnessed some fiery speeches and a minor clash during the presidential debate yesterday.

New Delhi: Voting for Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) poll is underway at the University campus on Friday. The voting will take place in two phases.

Amid slogans of Lal Salaam, Vande Mataram, some booing and a minor clash, the presidential debate was held at the University campus late yesterday.

At the much sought-after event, the candidates raked up national issues like abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and mob lynching, the NRC and even the forest fire in Amazon.

The issues in JNU were also raised but the speeches for a major part focussed on highlighting the achievements of the government, in case of the ABVP candidate and their criticism by the opposition parties.

Priyanka Bharti of Chhatra RJD and BAPSA candidate Jitendra Suna drew the largest cheers from the crowd, and were also cheered on by their opponents on some issues targeting the RSS-BJP.

The JNUSU this time is having 43 councillors as compared to 31 last year, the poll panel has said.

The increase in the number of councillors is due to an amendment made to the JNUSU constitution.

The nominations for the elections were filed on August 27. The results will be announced on September 8.
