New Delhi: Expressing reservation over India supporting French President Emmanuel Macron for his stand on the freedom of expression, prominent Muslim body Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has said no civilized society would ever allow any religious figure to be "insulted by anyone".

It also voiced support for the boycott call against French products given by Muslims in many countries.

In a statement, Jamiat general secretary Maulana Mahmood Madani strongly condemned Macron for "supporting insulting cartoons of Prophet Muhammad under the pretext of freedom of expression", and said Muslims world over don't do it for any religious leader as they are taught not to do it.

He, however, said Muslims should exercise restraint in the face of provocative situations and should also convey the true message of Islam with wisdom.

The beheading earlier this month of a French teacher who had shown caricatures of the Prophet in class again ignited a debate over such depictions considered blasphemous by Muslims.
