India makes powerful argument for UNSC reforms

Syed Akbaruddin while speaking at the 74th United Nations General Assembly asserted that obsolescent global structure is not fit to address challenges and security of 21st century. He even likened the reform process of the United Nations Security Council to a Greek tragedy enacted every year.

New Delhi:Pointing towards the changing world order, India's permanent representative at the United Nations Syed Akbaruddin made a powerful representation for reforms at the security council.

Speaking at the 74th United Nations General Assembly session on the question of equitable representation on and increase in the membership of the security council asserted that obsolescent global structure is not fit to address challenges and security of 21st century.

He even likened the reform process of the United Nations Security Council to a Greek tragedy enacted every year. Reminding the world that 11 years have passed since negotiations for has started but nothing concrete has been attained so far.

Warning the world community that inaction in this process doesn't come without a cost, the Indian envoy said, "our collective failure to deliver on the process of reforming the security council has serious implications for not only continuing the global governance institution but for the lives of millions of 'we the people' around the world."

Reminding the world that in 2020 United Nations will complete 75 years of its existence that's why it becomes imperative for the world body to take decisive action in this regard. He even said the exercise of Security Council reforms cannot be an unending merry go around.
