Delhi gets India's first smog tower

The device, which is the first of its kind in India, was installed at the busy Connaught Place. The smog tower will approximately cost Rs 20 crores and 42 lakhs.

New Delhi:In the past several years, air pollution has been a major problem in Delhi and the government has installed a 'smog tower' to keep the situation under control. The device, which is the first of its kind in India, was installed at the busy Connaught Place. State Environment Minister Gopal Rai visited the country's first smog tower being built at Connaught Place, the heart of Delhi.

After inspecting the device, state environment minister Gopal Rai spoke to ETV Bharat. "This is a pilot project, if it is successful, then many such smog towers will be built inside Delhi. This smog tower is different from the smog tower technology in China." He also said that the construction of the smog tower was delayed due to lockdown, but the target is to complete construction of the tower by August 15". "This smog tower will draw air from above and clean it and then release it so that people can get relief. He said it would be the first smog tower of its kind. The nodal department DPCC has been created for this project", Rai said.

The minister also said that IIT Mumbai, Tata Project Limited, and NBCC have lead roles in the project. The smog tower will approximately cost Rs. 20 crores 42 lakhs. The height of the tower is about 25 meters and its area is 40x40 square meters. It will emit clean air at the rate of one thousand cubic meters per second and consists of 10 thousand filters. Rai said the state government is thriving hard to control the pollution levels in Delhi, by conducting anti-dust campaigns and introducing new vehicle policies, electric buses and a tree-planting drive in the region.
