The father-son duo helped Muslim neighbours to shift in batches to the nearest Muslim locality of Kardampuri from Gokulpuri.

Talking to ETV Bharat Mahendra Singh said that he and his son took three to four women and children at a time on their bike and scooty and two to three boys at a time to Kardampuri.

We gave turbans to Muslim men so that they could not be recognized, he said.

I was sixteen in 1984 when the 1984 anti-Sikh riots took place. This violence reminded me of that, he added.

He saved people because he was saved by someone at that time.

"The Sikh principles teach us about humanity, love, and courage," he said.

"We did this only for humanity as we saw them as humans instead of any person with another religion," he added.

The locals helped to extinguish the fire in a house which could have resulted in the blast and huge loss of life and property, he also added.

Mahendra Singh will be honoured by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara management committee in upcoming days.
