Exclusive: 'China blocking UN sanctions on JeM again sends wrong message'

An estimeed faculty member at the JNU, has claimed that China's double standards on UN sanctions against JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar won't favour him.

New Delhi:China's double standards with regard to UN sanctions against Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) Chief Maulana Masood Azhar, post the dastardly Pulwama attack, would not work in its favour, JNU Professor B R Deepak, had said.

The Sinologist, whose area of teaching focuses on China and is also the recipient of China's highest literary award stressed that if China really wanted India on its side, it should give into the issue of terrorism.

"Terrorism in India is a very sensitive issue. If China once again exercises its veto, then it will lose its goodwill in India," he elaborated.

So far, apart from China, all other members of the UNSC have backed the UN sanctions on the JeM Chief.

The JNU professor also pointed out that by releasing the Pulwama attack video, JeM had made its agenda pretty clear and left China with only one option, which is to back the other UNSC members.

Previously, China has blocked at least three attempts to bring the JeM Chief under UN sanctions. The deadline for any security council member to raise objection to move will end at 3.00 pm on Thursday (IST).

The latest proposal to bring Masood Azhar under UN sanctions list was moved by France and had garnered support of UK, USA and Russia, other four permanent members of the UNSC with veto power.
