Winters in May: Delhi wakes up to foggy morning in hottest month of year

The shallow fog conditions got triggered by the unusually high moisture content in the air as well as the temperature difference between the daytime and nighttime, weather department officials said.

New Delhi:The national capital woke up to a foggy morning on Thursday in the hottest month of the year in the city. Delhi usually experiences a mean maximum temperature of 39.5 degrees Celsius in the month of May.

According to the weather department officials, the shallow fog conditions got triggered by the unusually high moisture content in the air as well as the temperature difference between the daytime and nighttime. The IMD determines shallow fog when visibility ranges between 501 and 1,000 metres.

Delhi, on Thursday, recorded a minimum temperature of 16.9 degrees Celsius at 6 am. On Wednesday, Delhi recorded 20.9 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm. The mercury level hit its maximum at 30.6 degrees Celsius which is nine notches below normal. This is due to intermittent rainfall and cloudy weather under the influence of successive western disturbances.

Palam, Lodhi Road, Ridge, Ayanagar, Mungeshpur, Narela, Pitampura and Pusa logged 11.8 mm, 24.6 mm, 14.6 mm, 13.8 mm, 31.5 mm, 9.5 mm, 55.5 mm and 15.5 mm of precipitation, respectively, on Wednesday.

The IMD predicted another western disturbance that may affect weather conditions in northwest India from Friday. Delhi may experience cloudy skies and sporadic rain until May 7. The maximum temperature is expected to remain below 35 degrees Celsius till May 9.
