Delhi records decline in crime against women

For the first time, Delhi has witnessed a decline in crime against women. From heinous crimes like rape, kidnapping to dowry-related atrocities, there is a fall in crime against women in the national capital this year.

New Delhi: The data as of October 15 this year shows that there has been a decrease in all crimes against women in the national capital. The incidents of rape against women have come down by 25 per cent, while there has been a 30 per cent decrease in the incidents of molestation this year.

There has also been a decline in cases ranging from kidnapping to dowry-related atrocities including murders. For the first time, there has been a 40 per cent decrease in the cases of dowry harassment. The statistics of Delhi Police shows that this year not only on the road but also at home, women have been safer than the previous year. The biggest reason for the decrease in these figures of crime this year is said to be the lockdown imposed in the wake of the corona pandemic.

LOCKDOWN BROUGHT CRIME DOWN

Former Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ved Bhushan said that lockdown has been the biggest reason for the decrease in crime against women this year. Because of the lockdown, women did not step out of their houses for about two months. In such a situation, there was a decrease in the crimes committed with them outside their homes. On the other hand, police officers in the police stations used to meet the people less during this period.

Complaints were being taken online. As a result, many women were unable to give their complaints. Due to this, many women have not been able to register their complaints with the police. It is true that the safety of women is the priority of the Delhi Police and it makes all efforts for this as well, but the major reason for the decrease in figures this year is the complete lockdown in force during April and May.

MEASURES TAKEN TO PROTECT WOMEN

* Women help desks have been set up in all police stations of Delhi so that women can complain without any worries.

* Himmat Plus app has been created for the safety of women, which has been linked with thousands of cabs.

* All women PCR vans were introduced and were deployed on the campus and in the market areas.

* There is round the clock helpline 1090 number for women

* A charge sheet is filed within 30 days of the arrest for a crime against females.

* The work on providing training to women for self-defence has been sped up in which the Delhi Police has trained a maximum number of women and has registered its name in the Limca Book of Records.

* The number of women investigating officers in the Delhi Police has been increased.

* A number of campaigns are conducted by the police to make women aware of their safety and security.
