New Delhi:The Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police is preparing to impose Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) on two jail officials who were arrested for helping conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar inside the Rohini Jail here.

Chandrasekhar, currently lodged in the Rohini Jail, had allegedly extorted Rs200 Crores from a businessman's wife by carrying out an extortion racket from inside the Rohini jail.

During interrogation, he revealed that the jail authorities used to provide him facilities including mobile, with the help of which he would carry out his frauds. Following this revelation, the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) arrested Jail Deputy Superintendent Subhash Batra and Assistant Jail Superintendent Dharam Singh Meena.

At the same time, an investigation is going on regarding the role of another jail officer.

The police have already registered a case of MCOCA against Sukesh Chandrashekhar in the first week of September. Chandrashekhar has also revealed that he used to give a huge amount to the jail authorities for help. The jail administration is also going to write to the Delhi government for the suspension of these officers.

According to the EOW, Chandrasekhar, along with two of his associates who worked for him from outside the prison, had extorted the amount from a businessman's wife (Aditi Singh) on the pretext of freeing her husband Shivendra Singh. The EOW of Delhi Police had arrested Singh, a former promoter of Ranbaxy, Fortis and Religare Enterprises, along with his brother Malvinder Mohan Singh in October 2019, for alleged financial irregularities.

According to sources, Shivendra's wife Aditi Singh had received several calls in the last few months from a man posing as an officer in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Enforcement Directorate. He told Aditi Singh that he would get her husband released and took Rs200 Cr from her.

Aditi on having suspected foul-play informed the entire matter to an officer of the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ED officer apprised Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana who launched an investigation.

During the course of the investigation, the police traced the call to the high profile criminal Sukesh Chandrashekhar and recovered two smartphones from him.
