New Delhi: After the tremendous victory of the Indian athletes in the Tokyo Olympics, the Delhi Sports University- a dream initiative of the Delhi government- is once again grabbing headlines. The Delhi government is reportedly putting best of its efforts to complete the project before the 2024 Paris Olympics. The foundation stone of the university has been laid with a view to ace India's performance in the Olympics. The "world-class" Delhi Sports University (DSU) will offer graduate, post-graduate and doctorate degrees in cricket, football, and hockey among other sports.
The Delhi cabinet has approved the university's setting up in an area of about 90 acres near the Ghevra metro station in the Mundka assembly constituency. Once completed, the University will be facilitated with all the requirements that are needed by a sportsperson. The university will have a school to enroll students and groom them for the Olympics at a young age. The University spread over 90 acres will have the field and pitches for all the sports. It will also offer training in all the sports including weightlifting, boxing, wrestling, badminton, hockey, and athletics. The government has also planned a special stadium designed for athletic sports. Visualizing the day-to-day routine in a sportsperson's life, the university will also build a sports hostel.
Though the construction work of the university yet to start, the government has laid the groundwork for building the entire system. Karnam Malleswari, a former weightlifter and the first woman to bring home an Olympic medal has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the Delhi Sports University. Meanwhile, Malleswari is busy completing the remaining paperwork. Along with that, the work of designing syllabus and courses is also to be expedited.
Recently, Malleswari had announced that the Delhi Sports University is likely to start admitting students from Classes six to nine from April next year and will start operations at the Ludlow Sports Castle in the national capital's Civil Lines area.
