New Delhi: After the tremendous victory of the Indian athletes in the Tokyo Olympics, the Delhi Sports University- a dream initiative of the Delhi government- is once again grabbing headlines. The Delhi government is reportedly putting best of its efforts to complete the project before the 2024 Paris Olympics. The foundation stone of the university has been laid with a view to ace India's performance in the Olympics. The "world-class" Delhi Sports University (DSU) will offer graduate, post-graduate and doctorate degrees in cricket, football, and hockey among other sports.

The Delhi cabinet has approved the university's setting up in an area of about 90 acres near the Ghevra metro station in the Mundka assembly constituency. Once completed, the University will be facilitated with all the requirements that are needed by a sportsperson. The university will have a school to enroll students and groom them for the Olympics at a young age. The University spread over 90 acres will have the field and pitches for all the sports. It will also offer training in all the sports including weightlifting, boxing, wrestling, badminton, hockey, and athletics. The government has also planned a special stadium designed for athletic sports. Visualizing the day-to-day routine in a sportsperson's life, the university will also build a sports hostel.

Though the construction work of the university yet to start, the government has laid the groundwork for building the entire system. Karnam Malleswari, a former weightlifter and the first woman to bring home an Olympic medal has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the Delhi Sports University. Meanwhile, Malleswari is busy completing the remaining paperwork. Along with that, the work of designing syllabus and courses is also to be expedited.

Recently, Malleswari had announced that the Delhi Sports University is likely to start admitting students from Classes six to nine from April next year and will start operations at the Ludlow Sports Castle in the national capital's Civil Lines area.

She said students who come in at a young age will be ready for the Olympics by the time they turn 18 or 19. She noted that the good thing about the university is that it will have a school to enrol students at a young age and groom them for the Olympics.

'We will start admitting students from Class 6 onwards and that student will remain with us till the PhD level. The good thing will be that if an 11-year-old child comes to us, then by the time he reaches 18-19, he will be ready for the Olympics. We are planning to start admissions by April and will enrol students from classes 6-9,' she added.

The admissions to the school are likely to start from April next year and the classes for the school will be starting at the Ludlow Sports Castle. Initially, 250 students will be enrolled, Malleswari said. Malleswari said the university will begin visits to identify talent within a month. The travel plans were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Delhi Government passed the Delhi Sports University Bill in December 2019 in the Delhi Assembly.
