Delhi-Dhaka to discuss illegal Bangladeshi, Teesta water issue among others

Sources in the government told ETV Bharat on Friday that India may raise the issue of illegal Bangladeshi as well as ongoing border fencing issue in the eastern sector. A number of Memorandum of Understanding are likely to be signed between Delhi and Dhaka during Hasina's visit.

New Delhi:The forthcoming visit of Bangladesh Premier Sheikh Hasina to India from October 3 is likely to discuss many major issues concerning the two neighbours.

Sources in the government told ETV Bharat on Friday that India may raise the issue of illegal Bangladeshi as well as ongoing border fencing issue in the eastern sector.

"The Bangladesh government had earlier said that if we can provide any documents of a person they will take back the individual and now after publishing the final NRC, this is for the first time the Bangladesh Premier is coming. We will try to raise the issue of illegal immigrants with the Bangladesh delegation," said a senior government official.

In fact, India's external affairs minister S Jaishankar in August did visit Bangladesh and reportedly discussed preparatory measures in relation to the visit of Hasina. Jaishankar had interacted with his Bangladesh counterpart AK Abdul Momen.

A number of Memorandum of Understanding are likely to be signed between Delhi and Dhaka during Hasina's visit.

During the meeting between Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Delhi is likely to reiterate its commitment to resolve the Teesta water issue.

Due to the protest raised by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Teesta water sharing issue could not be resolved. Mamata believes, if India shares the water of Teesta river with Bangladesh, many districts of her state would get dry.

"India and Bangladesh share a very cordial relation and with Sheikh Hasina's visit, the relation will get strengthened. India may raise the issue of illegal Bangladeshi. India may also like to reiterate its commitment to resolve the Teesta water issue," said senior journalist CK Nayak.

Hasina will stay in India till October 6.

After India published the final list of National Register of Citizen (NRC) on August 31, Bangladesh had said that "it was India's internal matter."
