Crime graph in Delhi rising under NDA: Reports

In crimes, the situation seems to be worse in Delhi when its latest figures were compared with Mumbai or Kolkata. From rape, abduction to murders, Delhi is changing its status from the political capital of India to the crime capital.

New Delhi: The unprecedented increase in crime, registered in the national capital, suggests the city is recording the highest number of crimes.

The statistics show that crime in the national capital has increased by 300 to 400 per cent in the last decade under the NDA regimes.

Violent crimes saw a marginal dip in 2011-12 compared with the previous years but after the Nirbhaya rape incident, the increasing crime rate raises questions about the efficiency of Delhi police.

The rate of incidence of heinous crimes like rape and murder has seen a steep rise in Delhi.

According to data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Delhi is ranked first among 19 other metropolitan cities in the country with regard to the number of crimes against women.

The data further reveals that during NDA government (2014-2019) the national capital accounted for more than 2,000 cases including robbery, motor vehicle theft and which holds the increase of 65 per cent crime rate than the UPA regimes.

Similarly, rape and sexual offences against woman have increased by 440 per cent.

Police in the other states come under the state government, but the Delhi Police is directly under the purview of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

In the past, former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit and the incumbent Arvind Kejriwal have repeatedly appealed to the central government to transfer the control of Delhi Police to State government for higher coordination.

But the Ministry of Home Affairs is yet to even consider this demand. During the recent riots in north-east Delhi also questions were raised about the efficiency of the police.
