China's underground military base near Tibet-Arunachal border raises eyebrows

The Chinese army trying to set up underground military facilities near Tibet-Arunachal Pradesh border is reportedly a cause of concern. Strategic affairs expert Subimal Bhattacharjee told ETV Bharat that the government should intervene and try to stop any more possible skirmishes.

New Delhi: China's latest initiative of upgrading its underground military base and infrastructure along the Tibet-Arunachal Pradesh border has raised eyebrows of India's strategic affairs experts.

"China has been trying to set up its land base as well as sea base...The latest reports of Chinese army trying to set up underground military facilities near Tibet-Arunachal Pradesh border is a cause of concern," said strategic affairs expert Subimal Bhattacharjee to ETV Bharat.

He said that the government of India should intervene and try to stop any more possible skirmishes.

"The matter should be taken up at the bilateral engagement level," he said.

Reports suggest that China has been upgrading its underground facilities at Lhoka, towards the Indian border in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh.

The tunnelling activity in these areas reportedly began in 2017 and excavation was noticed from April last year.

The underground facility Lhoka could be an ammunition storage facility.

This is, however, the latest development that took place along the India-China border after the 2017 Doklam standoff.

The standoff continued between Indian and Chinese army for 74 days from June to August 2017.
