Chidambaram, Sharmistha Mukherjee remarks could have been avoided: Meem Afzal

Congress has said comments by senior party leaders on AAP's win in Delhi were unwarranted and the party should strengthen itself to defeat forces such as the BJP.

New Delhi: A day after Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) registered a historic win in Delhi polls, the Congress regretted remarks made by its senior leaders about the election results, wherein former union minister P Chidambaram praised AAP for defeating BJP and another leader Sharmistha Mukherjee questioned him if the grand old party had 'outsourced the task' of defeating the saffron party.

Reacting to the remarks, Congress spokesperson Meem Afzal told ETV Bharat here that both the comments were not required and instead of praising the AAP, the party should try to strengthen itself.

He said the comments were 'unnecessary and could be avoided'.

"It's shameful. We must try and strengthen our own party. For BJP, getting defeated is not new. They are being defeated in various states one after the other but the Congress must strengthen itself," he asserted.

He also regretted Congress's Delhi in-charge P C Chacko's comment wherein he was quoted as saying that the party's 'downfall' started when Sheila Dikshit was Chief Minister.

"He should analyse what he has said," Afzal added.

On being asked about Union Minister Giriraj Singh's yet another outrageous hate speech, wherein he alleged that Islamic seminary Deoband in Uttar Pradesh is an 'aatankvaad ki Gangotri' (source of terrorists). He also added, after loosing several state elections, BJP must realise that hate speeches would not do.
