New Delhi: The case challenging some of the eligibility conditions for Delhi Ladli Scheme which focuses on protection of girl child has been pending for the last eight years, RTI activist Harpal Rana said on Sunday.
Eligibility criteria mandate that the girl child must have been born in Delhi as shown by the birth certificate issued by Registrar. Further, the applicant must be a bonafide resident of the National Capital Territory of Delhi for at least three years preceding the date of birth.
"In 2012, I was informed by the Department of Women and Child Development that efforts are underway to bring 'girl must be born in Delhi' criteria of Delhi Ladli Scheme to the notice of officials. But even after eight long years, the department revealed that the matter is still on hold. Girl child born outside Delhi aren't included in this scheme even if their parents belong to Delhi. This should be changed as soon as possible," Harpal Rana added. He also explained "Because of these criteria there are many people in need who aren't being able to enjoy the benefits provided by the government."

The scheme aims at enhancing the social status of girl child in the society as well in the family, ensuring proper education to make the girls self-reliant, ensuring her economic security and protecting them from discrimination and deprivation. This was however introduced in the year 2008 and it signifies the concept of empowering women at the fundamental level.
