Man hangs on to bonnet of moving car; driver blames victim

A car was spotted by the police driving for around 2 kilometers through the streets of Delhi with a man precariously clinging to its bonnet. The car driver told police that the victim deliberately climbed onto his car bonnet and did not dismount despite his repeated requests.

Delhi:A car travelling from Delhi's Ashram Chowk to Nizamuddin Dargah was spotted on camera driving for around two to three kilometres with a person hanging on the bonnet. The incident took place at 11 pm on Sunday. The video was shot from the rear window of another car. The police followed the car for some distance until it stopped. The police then interrogated the driver and the man spotted on the bonnet.

An FIR has been registered under sections of rash driving and endangering life by negligence at Sunlight Colony police station, the Delhi Police said. The accused has been arrested. The vehicle was found to be registered to a person named Ravindra Singh, police sources said.

The victim who has been identified as Chetan, speaking to ANI, said that he was a driver by profession and he was returning after dropping off a passenger. While he was at Ashram Chowk, another car, the one that was spotted on camera, hit his car thrice. Enraged at this rough and callous driving he got out of his car and stood in front of the other vehicle. However, the driver, who was allegedly drunk, did not stop, the victim said. Instead, he drove forward with the victim hanging on to his bonnet.

Despite asking him to stop several times, he drove on for a stretch of two to three kilometres from Ashram Chowk to Nizamuddin Dargah. "I kept asking him to stop, but he did not," the man who held on to the bonnet the entire time said speaking to ANI. Cops at a Police Control Room on the way followed the car for some distance and forced it to stop, he said.

Meanwhile, the accused who has been identified as Ramchand said that his car did not come in contact with the victim's car. "My car did not even 'touch' his car," he claimed. According to his version, the victim, Chetan, jumped onto the bonnet of his car deliberately and did not listen when he asked him to get down.

"I was driving when he deliberately jumped on the bonnet of my car. I asked him to get down but he did not listen," Ramchand said adding that he had even stopped his vehicle and pleaded with him. "I stopped my car and asked him what was he doing?" he said.

Hit and drag cases became a matter of alarm. In the Kanjhawala 'hit and run' case that came to light on New Year's Day, a Maruti Baleno car killed 20-year-old Anjali Singh by hitting her scooter and dragging her body for more than 12 kilometers from Sultanpur to Kanjhawala in the national capital.
