BJP demands Kejriwal sanction prosecution in JNU sedition case after his support to Art 370 move

Reacting over Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal's support on revoking the Article 370, the Delhi BJP has demanded that Kejriwal should grant sanction for prosecution of the accused in the JNU sedition case.

New Delhi: The Delhi BJP has demanded that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal grant sanction for prosecution of the accused in the JNU sedition case, in the backdrop of his support to Modi government's move to scrap Article 370.

The AAP supremo and Delhi chief minister on Monday said his party supported the Centre's decision to revoke Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Prompted by Kejriwal's support, Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari said he should also sanction prosecution in the JNU sedition case in which the Delhi Police filed a chargesheet in January this year.

"Kejriwal should stop supporting Tukde-Tukde gang and grant sanction for their prosecution, otherwise Delhi(people) will not forgive him," Tiwari said in a statement.

A case was lodged by the police against then JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar and several others, for being involved in an event at the university on February 9, 2016 , in which allegedly anti-India slogans were raised.

Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor in a letter to the chief minister demanded him to grant sanction for prosecution in the case.

Last month, a Delhi court granted two months to Delhi police to secure requisite sanctions to prosecute Kumar and others.

In his letter, Kapoor lauded Kejriwal's support to scrapping of Article 370 and added it is important that as chief minister he strengthened the Centre's resolve to fight "anti-national" activities.

"I take this opportunity to demand that if your support to Centre on Jammu and Kashmir is true then you should immediately allow prosecution of Kanahiya Kumar and others for the sedition case," Kapoor wrote to the Chief Minister.

Delhi police has told the court that the sanction has not been granted for prosecution in the case by Delhi government. The court has also sought a status report from the Delhi Police on the issue of sanction.
