'Bhushan should go for review in larger interest'

New Delhi: Prashant Bhushan, on whom a fine of Rs 1 was imposed by the Supreme Court as punishment in the contempt case, has a chance to go for a review of the judgement.

Arun Gupta, a senior advocate practicing at the apex court, told ETV Bharat here that it's an opportunity for the whole nation to have a clear cut definition of what constitutes contempt of the court.

The constitution grants you the freedom of expression and as you express yourself on certain matters concerning the court, it could be termed contempt of the court.

"Therefore, it's important to have a clear picture on the issue and lawyer Prashant Bhushan has a chance to get it defined from the court," he said, adding that a larger bench of the apex court can deliberate over the issue.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court imposed a token fine of Re 1 against activist-lawyer Prashan. Bhushan, who has been convicted for two tweets against the judiciary, has to deposit the fine with the Supreme Court registry by September 15.

Failure to comply would entail a three-month jail term and debarment from law practice for three years.
