Army jawan posted at Rashtrapati Bhawan hangs self to death

An Army jawan named Bahadur Thapa deployed on security at the Rashtrapati Bhawan was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his quarter. The reason behind the suicide is not yet known and no suicide note has been recovered by the police. The investigation is underway.

New Delhi: An Army jawan deployed on security at the Rashtrapati Bhawan allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday morning, a police official told ETV Bharat.

According to the police official, the jawan was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his quarter at Barrack C of the complex.

Deepak Yadav, Additional DCP, New Delhi, said, "The deceased Jawan has been identified as Bahadur Thapa. The reason for the suicide is not known yet and no suicide note has been recovered by the police."

The Police said they received information about the incident at around 4 a.m. at South Avenue police station in Central Delhi. When the officials reached the spot and took the jawan to the hospital, he was declared dead by the doctors.

As per the sources, Thapa was undergoing treatment for hypertension in the Base hospital while another official said that the jawan was suffering from back pain and high blood pressure.

On March 4, Minister of State for Defence Shripad Naik told the Lok Sabha that Army reported 73 cases of suicide last year.

The minister had then said that the Central government has taken several steps towards stress and amelioration amongst fruits like deployment of trained psychological counsellors, improvement in the quality of food and clothing, training in stress management and provision of recreational facilities.
