AAP MLA doubling up as water mafia, attacks complainants in South Delhi

The neighbourhood of South Delhi's Sangam Vihar with a population of over 1.5 million residents and no access to piped drinking water has lead to the birth of criminal activities and water mafias in the area. Recently, an AAP MLA along with his family and associates attacked some people from Sangam Vihar who had filed a complaint against them.

New Delhi: In a brazen act an MLA of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) along with his family and associates attacked some people from Sangam Vihar who had filed a complaint against them for controlling the government borewells and acting like water mafia.

On August 28, the MLA Dinesh Mohaniya and his 30-35 goons picked up a fight with the locals and thrashed them using hockey sticks relentlessly.

In the attacks, nearly a dozen people including one woman have been injured.

According to the injured members, when they reached the police station to lodge a complaint against Mohaniya, the Station house officer (SHO) refused and asked them to leave.

However, the entire ruckus has been captured on the CCTV on the street and the victims have filed a complaint by mail to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).

Earlier on July 30, a complaint was filed by the locals about the illegal supply of water and forcibly seizing up of the government pump after which an investigation was done and notably, a year ago many borewells in the same area were sealed on court's orders.

South Delhi’s Sangam Vihar is known for its water mafias and often features in news for fights and murders in extreme cases over the borewells and water tankers.

These gangs that claim ownership over the government borewells, sell the water and control who takes water from the bores.

But recently, the locals have started standing up against the mafias and started pooling in money to get borewells for themselves - an idea that hasn't gone down well with the MLA.
