Sarguja: Residents of Sarguja village in Chhattisgarh have been staring at an acute water crisis in the region, which has, in turn, forced them to either travel more than 5 km to fetch drinking water or drink contaminated water.

This along with rising mercury levels, which had dried up all available water resources, and indifference of the government authorities, has compounded the woes of the villagers.

"There are rivers, streams, wells, ponds, and borewells in the village, but they are on the brink of drying as the temperatures have been on the rise. In addition to this, there are also hand pumps installed across the district, but they have run dry, due to faults in the motor," remarked a resident.

The villagers further stated that they had, for several times, appealed to Public Health Engineering department to improve/repair the handpumps, but the latter did not send any workers to undertake repairs.

Other districts in Chhattisgarh, which have been facing the water crisis include Sitapur block and several villages under Mainpat.

"Due to the apathy of department officials, people are forced to drink contaminated water," claimed the locals, demanding for an immediate rectification of the issue.
