Sonia Gandhi launches Rajiv Gandhi Kisan Nyay Yojana for farmers

In order to encourage farmers to cultivate crops, Chhattisgarh government launched Rajiv Gandhi Kisan Nyay Yojana, wherein, Rs 1500 crore will be transferred online to the accounts of farmers as the first instalment out of total Rs 5700 crores provisioned under the scheme.

Raipur: On the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Chhattisgarh Government, along with Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, launched 'Rajiv Gandhi Kisan NYAY Yojana', which will benefit 19 lakh farmers in the state.

While addressing the launch event via video conferencing, Congress President said, "Implementing such effective and revolutionary schemes at the grassroot level to help poor people and bring a change in their lives, is a true tribute to Rajiv Gandhi. This is a big step taken in lines with the values of Rajiv Gandhi."

She also mentioned that the scheme will give financial benefit even to the landless tribal agricultural labourers in the second phase, by directly transferring money in their account.

"This unique decision will make them all self-sufficient," she added.

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi also lauded the scheme and the efforts put up by the state government towards this scheme ti help poor farmers who were facing hardships due to coronavirus pandemic, leading to nationwide lockdown.

In the launch event, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel informed that the scheme will benefit 19 lakh farmers of the state and help to bring more area under cultivation, which currently stands at 20 percent.

In the first installment, ₹1500 crore would be distributed among 18 lakh farmers. The scheme would cover rice, maize and sugarcane farmers in the beginning.

Rice and Maize farmers would get ₹10,000 an acre, while sugarcane farmers would get ₹13,000.

This money would be distributed in installments. Chhattisgarh CM also informed that in the second phase, landless farmers and labourers will also be covered under this scheme and a committee has been tasked to come up with a mechanism.

"I hope this scheme would help us to remove the tag of 'poorest state' of the country and would benefit our poor and vulnerable people," he said.
