Korba (Chhattisgarh): A young girl's innovative idea of making eco-friendly sanitary napkins has won her a place inJapan-Asia Youth Exchange Program in Science (SAKURA).
Reena's biodegradable sanitary napkin earns her place in SAKURA Breaking the social stigma associated with the menstrual cycle, Reena, a class 11 student of government high school in Korba, came forward with the idea of biodegradable and eco-friendly sanitary pads.
She said," Banana stems have a huge capacity to absorb water. They are even used in Kerala for making clothes. I thought of making Sanitary napkins from it as it has a natural absorbing capacity."
Since three years, Reena has been working on this idea with the help of her school principal Farhan Ali.
Rina's school principal praising her innovation said, "Seeing her keen interest in science, I advised her to participate in central government programme 'Inspire India' after which she came up with the idea of making pads from Banana stem."
Reena will be leaving for Japan on 19th April to participate in SAKURA. She will be staying with a family in Japan and will share her innovative ideas with them. Several scientists, academician and students will be also present there in the exhibition.
Reena was planning to participate at the national level in Delhi IIT. Later on, she was informed by her principal that Innovation Foundation has selected her for the exchange program.
