Gandhian Prof Khera passes away after prolonged illness

Prof. Prabhu Dutt Khera, a social worker who has given his life in the education and upliftment of tribal children has passed away. He was 93. Khera had been working in the forests of Chhattisgarh for 35 years to educate tribal children.

Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh):Gandhian ideologue and retired professor of Delhi University, Dr. Prabhu Dutta Khera died today afternoon after a prolonged illness. He was 93.

He was admitted to Apollo hospital in Bilaspur for the last three months.

His last rites will be performed on Tuesday (September 24) at Lamani village in Mungeli district of Chattisgarh.

Earlier in December, Prof. Khera was admitted to a private hospital after he suffered a minor heart attack.

Prof. Khera worked for the upliftment of tribals for nearly 35 years in the villages of Achanakmar Tiger of Lormi.

Recently Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel visited him in the hospital.

Prof Khera is known for providing free education to the 'Baiga' tribe children.

It is said that about 40 years ago, Professor Kheda went to the Achanakmar area as part of the study tour with a batch of students from New Delhi.

During that time, while passing through the road, he spent some time among the tribals living there and show the illiteracy and poverty of the Baiga tribe.

After retirement, he came back to the forest of Lormi and started to uplift these tribals by educating them and teaching them about society.

He served the village for around 35 years.

Senior journalist Kamal Dubey told ETV Bharat that Professor Khera was a Gandhian thinker. His own life was also strongly influenced by Mahatma Gandhi.

Recently, the government of Chhattisgarh had felicitated him with the maiden ‘Mahatma Gandhi Smriti Karyanjali Puraskar’ which carries citation and Rs 5 lakh cash.
