Raipur (Chhattisgarh): As the coronavirus has brought the world to its knees, hygienic practices and social distancing have become the need of the hour. However, the conditions of the quarantine facilities in various parts of Chhattisgarh tell a different tale.

After walking and struggling miles together the poor migrants reach their native lands where they are asked to stay at quarantine centres, which are in pathetic conditions.

Poor conditions of quarantine centres in Chhattisgarh are now in focus after more than 10 people died at the facilities in the state in past few days. The plight began mainly after migrant workers started pouring in.

  • Deaths at quarantine centres in the state began on May 14 with the suicide of a youth at Sarangarh centre
  • On May 17, a man died of snake bite at Mungeli
  • A man hanged himself at a quarantine centre in Balod on May 19
  • Another man died of snakebite in Rajnandgaon centre on May 21
  • A teacher died of a heart attack while on duty at a quarantine centre in Balrampur
  • A man died under mysterious circumstances at a centre in Bemetera on May 20
  • A man hanged himself at Ambikapur's isolation ward on May 25
  • A labourer lost his life at Rajnandgaon centre on May 26
  • A 4-month-old baby died at Balod quarantine centre on May 28
  • An eighteen-month-old baby died at Gaurella quarantine centre
  • A pregnant woman died at Gariaband quarantine centre

It is to be noted that as the entire country is under coronavirus-induced lockdown, millions of migrant workers are returning to their native places.

In such a situation, those who are returning to Chhattisgarh are being kept for 14 days in a government school or a quarantine centre in a government building. But the plight of poor migrant workers has no parallel as they seem to be worst sufferers of ongoing nationwide lockdown.
