Bihar villagers take dead body to bank, demand money from deceased's account

Following the death of 55-year-old Mahesh Yadav, the villagers decided to go ahead with his last rites. However, they were falling short of money. Realising that Mahesh was alone with no legal heir or guardian, they decided to take money from his account and use that for the cremation process. They took the dead body to the Canara bank and demanded the officials to give them cash from Mahesh's account.

Patna:In a never-seen-before case, the villagers in Shahjahanpur instead of taking a dead body to the crematorium, took it to a bank demanding the money deposited in the deceased's account.

Following the death of 55-year-old Mahesh Yadav, the villagers decided to go ahead with his last rites. However, they were falling short of money.

Realising that Mahesh was alone with no legal heir or guardian, they decided to take money from his account and use that for the cremation process.

They took the dead body to the Canara bank and demanded the officials to give them cash from Mahesh's account.

But, the bank manager denied their demand citing procedural issues.

It is then the villagers left the dead body in the bank as an act of protest and started agitation outside the premises.

Due to the commotion, the village panchayat, local police, and others gathered at the spot. Then, a donation was collected by the Canara Bank manager who gave Rs 10,000 to the villagers for the last rites.

"There is 1 lakh 18 thousand rupees in the account of the deceased Mahesh Yadav, but there is no name in the nomination has been mentioned. Till any of his successors do not make the death claim, the money will not be released by the bank," Sandeep Kumar, Bank manager said.
