Purnia (Bihar): Apart from the neighbouring country Pakistan, another 'Pakistan', a village also resides in Purnia district of Bihar. Feeling embarrassed of the name, people in this village now demand to change the name of their village from Pakistan to 'Birsa Nagar'.

The people of Pakistan village in Srinagar block of Bihar's Purnia district have submitted an application to the district magistrate to change the name of the village.

Confirming this, district magistrate Rahul Kumar said that he has received an application and necessary steps will be taken to change the name of the village.

"I have instructed the block development officer to look into the matter and change the name of the village as per the wishes of people," said Kumar.

The people here have decided to change the name of Pakistan village to Birsa Nagar after the name of Lord Birsa Munda.

Shubham Lakra, a local resident, said, "We have to face many problems due to the name of our village. There is neither a school nor a hospital in this village. Due to its name, we have to face a lot of difficulties in getting our sons and daughters married."

Incidentally, no one has any hint as to how the village got this name. According to some, the village got its name during 1947 Partition. Minorities living here moved to Pakistan. After this people named the village as 'Pakistan Tola.'

Another story goes back to the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war. Some refugees from East Pakistan came here during the war and made a settlement. These refugees named this village as Pakistan. Though after the formation of Bangladesh they went back but the name of the village remained Pakistan.

About 35 km from the Purnia district headquarters, the only people who live in this village are the tribal community with a population of 1,200.
