Bihar inks MoU with UNEP to tackle climate change

Bihar has inked a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). UNEP will provide an array of support for the state's climate goals, developing climate analyses and supporting the state government's capacity to handle climate-related issues.

New Delhi: The Bihar government on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to tackle the issue of climate change.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Bihar's Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Neeraj Singh. Bihar Deputy CM Tarkishore Prasad was also present.

Under the partnership, UNEP will support the state of Bihar in preparing a greenhouse gas inventory and carbon footprint analyses. UNEP will also help develop climate impact vulnerability assessments and increasing capacity of Bihar’s government departments to deal with climate-related issues.

Minister Neeraj Singh said that this was a historic agreement.

He added that the Bihar government is working to get rid of pollution.

The work of installing CNG pump and laying PNG pipeline is going on in Gaya, Patna, and Muzaffarpur. 15-year-old vehicles will be removed, while small vehicles and buses will be converted to CNG in time, he informed.
