Bihar: Encephalitis death toll rises to 83

In Bihar, the Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) claimed 11 more lives in Muzzafurpur on Saturday, taking the death toll to 83.

Bihar: Encephalitis death toll rises to 83

Muzaffarpur: Eleven more patients have died due to the Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Bihar's Muzaffarpur on Saturday.

The death toll due to the viral infection has reached 83.

According to the reports, 38 patients in Shri Krishna Medical College Hospital and 6 patients in Kejriwal Hospital have been admitted on Saturday. With a total of 44 new patients, the district has witnessed around 243 cases of AES.

However, as per the government data, only 165 cases have been reported so far in which 66 children have died.

As many as 55 children have died in the SKMC Hospital and 11 in the Kejriwal Hospital. Besides, three deaths in the Samastipur district have also been reported.

Health Minister of Bihar Mangal Pandey surveyed the area on Thursday. The students of Jan Adhikar Chhatra Parishad (JAAP) also protested in front of the minister's residence and accused the government of not taking effective measures to control the disease.

11 more children have died in Bihar

A high-level meeting was conducted in New Delhi on Thursday. Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, State Minister Ashwani Choubey and all the other top officials were present in the meet.

District Magistrate of Muzaffarpur on Friday said that for students till Class 8, schools will remain closed till June 22 and for students in higher standards, classes will be held only till 10.30 am.

Encephalitis is a viral disease, which causes flu-like symptoms such as high fever, convulsions and headaches.
