Agartala:The leader of the opposition in Tripura has criticized the state government and said that the law and order situation has worsened in the last three and a half years and highlighted cases of mob lynching and custodial deaths.
Manik Sarkar demanded a high-level inquiry into the lynching death and presented a list of incidents before the media and said they required thorough investigation but failed to draw enough attention from the state’s law enforcement agencies.
“In the last two years, from June 28, 2019, to June 25, 2021, a total of nine incidents of mob lynching were reported. In one case, the victims somehow managed to escape an irate mob. In addition to this, five cases of custodial deaths were reported in various jails of the state. In one case, the accused collapsed while being moved to the court and died thereafter," Sarkar said.

"As of now, we know little about the developments in the investigation being carried out in these cases; forget about arresting the culprits”, Sarkar said. " It showed how the government was abdicating its responsibilities of taking stern actions against anti-social elements," he added.
Briefing the media at the party’s state headquarters, he said, the incidents in terms of numbers are worrisome. But, till date, there is no statement from the Chief Minister who is also the home minister of the state. He should have spoken strongly against these incidents so that the people would have a sense of security.

“Even after assertive statements assuring us of zero tolerance to violence against opposition parties from Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and Governor Ramesh Bais, the attacks on opposition parties have continued. The incidents not only described the law and order situation but also proved the failure of the state government,” he said.
