Tribal organisations in Assam to call for economic blockade against CAB

The Coordination Committee of Tribal Organisations (CCTO), Assam has decided to go for an economic blockade against the Citizenship Amendment Bill. According to the committee, CAB will change the demography of the Northeast and thus an Amendment is required to be made in it.

New Delhi: Going ahead with their tirade against Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), the Coordination Committee of Tribal Organisations (CCTO) in Assam has decided to call for an indefinite economic blockade in the state.

Talking to ETV Bharat, Aditya Khaklari, chief coordinator of CCTO said that the bill is posing as a threat to the indigenous people of Assam.

"This bill will also change the demography of Northeast. We will take extreme democratic steps including economic blockade to press our demand to withdraw the CAB," said Khaklari.

The Narendra Modi Government has been planning to introduce the CAB in the ongoing winter session of Parliament.

The bill seeks to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955 and grant citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afganistan who have illegally migrated into India.

"This is a political game plan of the BJP government. It's only to get political mileage by giving citizenship to the Hindu population excluding Muslims," said Khaklari.

The tribal body has already approached all opposition parties to support them in their movement.

"We have met Congress, JD(U), Left parties among other in the last few days and appealed then to oppose CAB," said Khaklari.

It may be mentioned here that several other organisations from Assam and Northeast including All Assam Students Union (AASU), North East Student Organisation (NESO) have also met several opposition party leaders to gather their support.
