State within a state: Karbi MPs submit memorandum to Home min

Fifth and Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution that gives Autonomous District Councils (ADC) in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram to have their own executive rule and govern themselves wherein MP's from Assam's autonomous districts have submitted a memorandum to Home Minister Amit Shah demanding an autonomous state.

New Delhi:Assam's autonomous district Karbi Anglong comes under the Fifth and Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution that gives Autonomous District Councils (ADC) in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram to have their own executive rule and govern themselves. After the declaration of Ladakh as a Union territory, several leaders from Karbi Anglong district have come to the front demanding conversion of their district into an 'autonomous state' under Article 244 (A) of the Indian Constitution.

Raising their demand, elected representatives from Karbi Anglong district of Assam submitted a memorandum to the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah on Monday.

Post the announcement of Ladakh as a Union Territory, BJP MP, Harem Singh Bey on Monday told ETV Bharat, "If the government can make Ladakh a union territory, Karbi Anglong has the right to get an autonomous state status too. This has been our demand for several decades."

Bey said that their fight for a separate state within Assam has been continuing for the last three decades. He believes that PM Modi and Union Minister Amit Shah will definitely approve of their demands.

Adding to this, Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) MP from Assam, Biwajit Daimary spoke about the creation of state within the state.

Daimary asserted, "According to Article 244 (A), the state can be bestowed with legislative power."

The demand for an autonomous state has been a top priority for the representatives from the Karbi region.

Many banned outfits have also supported the demand for the creation of the autonomous state.
