SC issues notice to Centre, Assam govt over congestion in NRC detention centres

The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the Centre and the Assam government in response to a PIL filed against the problem of overcrowding of people in NRC detention centres. Meanwhile, it agreed to bear the matter on Monday again and directed the government to file a response of the notice issued by the top court on Tuesday.

New Delhi:The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the Centre and the Assam government in response to a PIL filed against the problem of overcrowding of people in NRC detention centres.

The Supreme court had earlier directed the state to release the people who have spent more than 3-years in the detention centres as there is no possibility of deportation adding the people are forced to live in an unhygienic condition.

Meanwhile, it agreed to bear the matter on Monday again and directed the government to file a response of the notice issued by the top court on Tuesday.

To accommodate disenfranchised persons, detention camps have been set up across the state. At present, there are six detention centres in Assam’s Goalpara, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Silchar, Kokrajhar, and Tezpur, where district jails have been converted to camps.

About four million applicants did not make it to the draft NRC published in July 2018. The final list, published on 31 August 2019, is available online and at all NRC seva kendras in the state.
