Kokrajhar (Assam):Assam Police have unearthed technologically advanced illegal arms, ammunition and explosives from different places across the Bodoland Territorial Region, an official informed on Friday.

Speaking to media persons, DGP, Bodoland Territorial Region said, "A search operation was carried out and a huge cache of arms, ammunition and explosives were recovered which was buried underground in jungle areas."

"Based on specific information and intelligence inputs, the Assam Police has been able to unearth these arms. A few of the arms have been damaged as these are believed to have been kept under the earth 10 to 12 years ago," Baruah said.

"From March this year till the present, the police have recovered M 16 and H&K rifles including 40 AK series rifles, 17 pistols, 174 grenades, 1510 live cartridges, a huge quantity of explosives and walkie talkies. Police recovered magazine and ammunition, AK series Rifles, Chinese hand grenades and other incriminating documents which were all buried underground in jungle areas," she added.

Though it is suspected that the consignment belongs to militant outfit, National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), investigations are still underway.

Notably, the NDFB cadres had reportedly deposited all their arms and ammunition to the police while surrendering before the peace accord was signed.

On Aug 16, Kokrajhar police recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from Saraibil and Serfanguri area. Earlier on Aug 14, Udalguri police and Guwahati City Police recovered huge cache of arms and ammunitions.

After the agreement on Bodoland Territorial Council was signed in 2003, the historical Bodo Accord was signed this year so that peace may prevail in Bodoland.

The accord was finally signed in New Delhi between the union government, state government and four fractions of the NDFB. Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon arrived in Bodoland and very warmly addressed the people here, yet the actions failed to deliver lasting peace in Bodoland.

Now the questions arise that which organisation is operating with these illegal arms and ammunitions. What will be the motive behind hiding these arms at different places? Will peaceful elections be possible in Bodoland Territorial Region in such an atmosphere?
