Officials clear 10 shafts of Meghalaya's coal mine on Sunday

The efforts of recovering the bodies of trapped miners in the Meghalaya Coal Mine has made little progress as the process of cleaning the 10 shafts was completed recently. The NDRF and the SDRF continue to be present on the site to assist other agencies with all available resources. The miners got trapped in the illegal mine in Lumthari village when water from the nearby Lytein river flooded the mine.

East Jaintia Hills (Meghalaya): Efforts to recover the bodies of the miners trapped in a 'rat-hole coal pit' in Meghalaya had made little progress, as the process of cleaning the ten shafts was completed on Sunday.

Dewatering the incident siteand its adjoining areas by CIL pump continued for 16 hours till 5 pm on Sunday.

It pumped out 2160000 litres of water while the KSB pumped 6336000 litres. Another Kirloskar pump also discharged 2880000 litres of water.

Among the 15 miners trapped in the narrow caverns, the officials managed to recover two bodies on the 77th day of the incident which occured on December 13, last year.

Multiple agencies, including the NDRF and SDRF, have been involved in the operations, currently underway at Ksan near Lyteiñ River in East Jaintia Hills.

On January 28, the Supreme Court had asked the Centre and the Meghalaya government to continue their efforts to rescue the miners.

The miners got trapped in the illegal mine in Lumthari village when water from the nearby Lytein river flooded the mine.

Since then, a multi-agency rescue operation has been underway to rescue the miners.
