No person should be deprived of human rights, says Sanjoy Hazarika after NRC publication

Hours after the final National Register of Citizen (NRC) list was published in Assam, Sanjoy Hazarika, Director of Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) assured that despite it citizens or non-citizens of India, human rights will not be deprived.

New Delhi/Assam:Renowned author and Director of Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) Sanjoy Hazarika on Saturday said that nobody in India can be deprived of their human rights be it citizens or non-citizens.

"Human rights are for everybody in India. It's part of the universal declaration of human rights and India is one of the signatories," said Hazarika to ETV Bharat.

He spoke to ETV Bharat hours after the final list of National Register of Citizen (NRC) was published in Assam. The list excluded names of more than 19 lakh people in the state.

"According to Article 21 of the Constitution, no one in India can be deprived of life and liberty," said Hazarika adding "Migration is a problem worldwide and thus can't be handled in an arbitrary way.

"Hazarika who has authored several books especially on Northeast said that NRC publication will not affect the bilateral ties between India and Bangladesh."This (NRC) will not have any impact on the bilateral and diplomatic relation with Bangladesh," said Hazarika.

"They (Bangladesh) will never accept a large scale influx from their territory. We don't have deportation policy with Bangladesh too...What we can do is that we should push the intruders from the border itself," said Hazarika.

The author said that the publication of NRC is a step forward in implementing various clauses of the 1985 Assam Accord.

"Many were expecting an error-free NRC but it's difficult to achieve the feat in a complex place like Assam," said Hazarika. Elaborating on the likely impact of NRC on the neighbouring states of Assa, Hazarika said, "Impact is already there. States are preparing their own list.

"Hazarika said that there is Article 371 (A) for the protection of indeginious people in Nagaland and asked if there will be a similar law for other states.
