Guwahati (Assam): Researchers at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), a premier institute of national importance in Guwahati, have developed a 3D-printed hands-free object and a 3D-printed antimicrobial face-shield to combat COVID-19.

After a thorough study of the spread of the virus through the mouth, eyes and nose, a special face shield was created. It is cheap and extremely easy to wear. This solid shield can be cleaned with sanitizers and other anti-virus solutions.

NIPER has also created a three-layer special face mask to prevent coronavirus from entering the body through the nose, mouth or eyes. This mask can successfully prevent spreading of microbial viruses from one to another. The person who wears the mask can breathe freely without any trouble; and it can be easily cleaned with sanitizers or any alcoholic disinfectant.

NIPER Researchers have also developed a hook that can be used by forearms to open doors, windows, drawers, lifts, to press computer keyboard keys, and to turn switches on and off. The use of this device could prevent the spread of the virus through the hands, NIPER researchers said.

"We are trying our best in the country's war on Corona. These inventions are part of it. We are ready to deliver this technology for the benefit of the people in the states where the problem is severe," said Dr USN Murthy, Director, NIPER-Guwahati.
