New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to amend the rules increasing the present time of filling appeals for citizenship in Assam from 60 to 120 days.

The development took place in a review meeting chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah over National Register of Citizen (NRC) that took place at the Home Ministry.

In the meeting, it was decided that arrangements will be made by the state government to provide full opportunity to the people excluded from the final NRC to appeal against their non-inclusion.

Every individual whose name does not figure in the final NRC can represent his or her case in front of the appellate authority, Foreigner Tribunals (FTs).

Under the provisions of Foreigners Act 1946 and Foreigners Tribunals Order 1964, only FTs are empowered to declare a person as a foreigner.

"We the Jamiat Ulema want that an error-free NRC should be published on August 31. And we have faith in the Supreme Court that with his intervention only an error-free NRC will be published," said Zakir Alam, leader, Jamiat Ulema.

In the review meeting, the Assam government has agreed to set up an adequate number of such tribunals at convenient locations. It has also been decided that state government would also make arrangements to provide legal aid to the needy excluded from NRC list.

The final NRC will be published in Assam on August 31.
