Manohari Gold tea of Assam sold at Rs 50,000 per kg, breaking all records

The famous Manohari Tea from Assam was sold at a whooping Rs 50,000 per kg, breaking all the records on Tuesday. The special tea was bought  by Sourabh Tea Traders Pvt Ltd at Guwahati Tea Auction Centre.

Assam:Manohari Gold Tea, a rare variety of tea from Assam, was sold at a staggering price of Rs 50,000 per kg under the pan-India auction system at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre in Guwahati on Tuesday.

The highest bid for the Manohari Gold tea was made by Sourabh Tea Traders Pvt. Ltd. Manjilal Maheshwari, from Sourabh Tea Traders, had bought 2 kilograms of Manohari Gold tea in 2018 as well.

The Manohari Gold Tea is cultivated from the finest P-126 tea clones, hand-picked early morning in the second flush season between May and June, and has a subtle aroma with the liquor having a rich gold colour, Manohari Tea Estate owner Rajan Lohia said.

Last year, the Golden Needles tea variety from the Donyi Polo Tea Estate in Arunachal Pradesh created a record by fetching Rs 40,000 per kilo at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre. The Manohari Gold Tea had also managed a price of Rs 39,001 a kilo in that auction.

"The price that Manohari Gold has fetched is perhaps the highest for tea in a public tea auction in the world and it is a proud moment for GTAC which has emerged as a hub for specialty tea," claimed secretary of Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association, Dinesh Biyani.

The GTAC is a platform for tea producers to sell superior quality tea and its demand is increasing across the country which will encourage tea producers to cultivate good quality specialty tea to be auctioned at the centre," Biyani added.

The Manohari Gold is, indeed, the highest grossing tea at an auction in the country. The world’s most expensive, though, is China’s legendary Da Hong Pao tea that costs more than 30 times its weight in gold.
