Hooch tragedy: 18 tea estate workers die in Assam

In a hooch tragedy, 18 people died, including four women, allegedly by consuming spurious liquor at Halmira Tea Estate in Golaghat district of Assam. The deceased were the tea estate workers.

Guwahati: In yet another hooch tragedy, 18 people died, including four women, allegedly by consuming spurious liquor at Halmira Tea Estate in Golaghat district of Assam.


While four deaths were reported on Thursday, the number increased to 13 on Friday. The deceased were the tea estate workers.

The numbers may increase further as many others are still admitted in Golaghat civil hospital. Meanwhile large number of villagers have gathered outside the hospital to protest against the incident and local administration's inaction against those involved in manufacturing illegal country liquor in the area.

In another incident, 21 labourers of Doyang Tea Estate died consuming spurious country liquor few days ago.

Police investigation into the matter is underway.
