Himanta Biswa Sarma to be Assam's new CM

Guwahati: Former Assam health minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma was on Sunday elected as the leader of the BJP legislative party in the state. He will succeed Sarbananda Sonowal as the Chief Minister of Assam.

After resigning from the Chief Minister's post on Sunday, Sonowal proposed the name of Himanta Biswa Sarma as the next Chief Minister during the legislature party meeting and party president in Assam and Patacharkuchi MLA, Ranjit Kumar Dass supported the proposal.

The BJP convened a meeting of its legislature party on Sunday at the Legislative Assembly in Guwahati, to name the next Chief Minister of the state. A week ago the BJP won the election in Assam and retained power.

The swearing-in ceremony of the new government is likely to take place on Monday. For a change, it will take the oath of office and secrecy at a function to be held at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra, according to reports.

All the 60 newly-elected BJP MLAs were asked to reach the Assam legislative assembly at 11 am on Sunday.

Although it was given to understand that the party will take a decision on the next Chief Minister after the meeting with the newly elected legislators, sources in the saffron party said that the blueprint was actually prepared in Delhi during the series of meetings that took place on Saturday.

On Saturday late night Sonowal, Himanta Biswa Sarma and senior party leaders including party general secretary Arjun Singh, Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, observer for Assam Baijainta Jai Panda and the party's organizing general secretary BL Santosh returned to Assam on a chartered flight.
