Day ahead of CM's visit, weapons recovered in Assam's Kokrajhar

Ahead of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, security forces on Saturday recovered huge cache of illegal arms including AK series rifles in Assam's Kokrajhar district. During operation, the security forces had recovered huge cache of arms, ammunition, explosives which were kept concealed underground in thick forest area.

Kokrajhar (Assam): Day ahead of the scheduled visit of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, police and security forces recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from Akshiguri in Ripu Reserve Forest of Assam'sKokrajhar district on Saturday.

According to reports, a joint team of Indian Army, SSB and Assam Police conducted a successful search operation at Akshiguri in Ripu Reserve Forest of Kokrajhar. Following search operation, a huge cache of arms, ammunition, high explosives and grenades were recovered from there.

"On receiving specific input from sources about the location of weapon cache, we launched a search operation. A huge cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from the forest area under Saraibeel area in Kokrajhar. The arms and ammunition were hidden underground. The arms and ammunition including AK 47 rifles, huge rounds of live ammunition, grenade, bombs, hand made guns etc," a police official said.

"The recoveries have been handed over to Assam Police for further investigation. The Security Forces will continue to undertake all actions to end insurgency and create a peaceful atmosphere for the future generation," the police official said.

The development assumes significance also due to the fact Kokrajhar and other four districts of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) are going for the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) polls, scheduled for December 7 and 10.

Reportedly, CM Sonowal is scheduled to visit Fakiragram area under Kokrajhar district on Sunday to address a public rally for the BTC polls, which is located only 11 km away from the place where the arms and ammunition were recovered.
