Assam MP's mother served NRC objection

Speaking to ETV Bharat, the Assam Congress MP Abdul Khaleque said that before reaching Delhi, Khaleque verified his mother's citizenship at Barpeta in Assam.

However, the objector did not turn up after which Khaleque submitted all the documents substantiating his 75-years-old mother's citizenship.

Abdul Khaleque said that it was harassment for them. Despite his mother's appearing in the 1951 NRC, 1971 electoral roll, her name did not appear in the NRC.

Officials engaged in the exercise to update the Supreme Court-monitored NRC are currently verifying claims and objections.

The final NRC is scheduled to be published on July 31.

Khaleque said that his main aim as an MP would be to preserve the Barpeta Satra as a heritage site.

The Barpeta Satra was established by Vaishnavite saint Madhabdev in 1583 AD.

He also added, "I will also work on the process to mitigate erosion problem in Barpeta."

Referring to the issue of D (Doubtful) voters, Khaleque said he would solve this problem and fight against it.

Khalaque is among the two other Congress MP who defeated their opponents amid the NaMo wave.
