Assam flood: Over 30,000 people affected, inundate 5 of 33 districts

As per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, heavy rainfall has inundated five of Assam’s 33 districts affecting over 30,000 people as of Monday.

Assam:With heavy rains lashing many parts of Assam, the first wave of flash floods have inundated five of the state’s 33 districts affecting over 30,000 people as of Monday.

As per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), a total of 127 villages in eight revenue circles of Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Darrang and Goalpara districts were affected.

However, no casualties have been reported so far.

ASDMA officials further said that a total of 33 relief camps have been set up in the flood-hit districts where 8,941 people have been sheltered.

Over 500 hectares of agricultural land has also been affected by the flash flood, some with standing crops on it, officials said adding that floodwaters have also led to erosion in some areas.

Nearly 12,000 domestic animals and poultry have also been affected.

Meanwhile, the Central Water Commission (CWC) on Monday said that Jia Bharali and Puthimari rivers have been flowing above danger level marks.

It may be mentioned here that Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had recently held a meeting with the top brass of the state government and asked them to ensure that all districts are prepared to deal with the flood situation.
