Assam Cong prez demands action against people feasting on elephant meat

Assam Congress president Ripun Bora on Saturday reiterated the need to take strict action against the consumption of elephant meat. According to reports, people in Mizoram and Nagaland have been feasting on elephant meat.

New Delhi: At a time when Narendra Modi Government has taken strong action against cow slaughter across India, feasting on elephant meat has raised a hue and cry in Northeast.

"Feasting on elephant meat is very serious. Government must take strong action against such incidents and people involved with this," said Ripun Bora, a lawmaker from Assam.

According to the report, people in remote village in Mizoram and Nagaland have been feasting on elephant meat.

Photos circulated in social media of elephants being skinned for consumption in Nagaland's Zunheboto district and Kanhmun forest range in Mizoram have gone viral.

"In fact the Supreme Court has also issued guidelines of taking action for cruelty against such animals," said Bora.

He added: "Government both at the Centre and states must take strong against over such incidents."

The incident has also raised eyebrows of wildlife and environment activists.

The Ministry of Environment and Forest has also taken serious note of the incident.

The project elephant division of the ministry, according to sources, has asked for reports both from Mizoram and Nagaland government.
