New Delhi: The All Koch Rajbongshi Students Union (AKRSU) on Monday submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah appealing to include all the excluded 'Rajbongshi' people in the National Register of Citizen (NRC) list.

"We are the indigenous people of Assam but thousands of our people have been excluded from the NRC list," said an AKRSU leader.

The union has given an ultimatum to NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela to launch a vigorous movement if their demands are not fulfilled.

More than 56,000 Rajbongshi people have been excluded from NRC list in Assam that was published on August 31.

The AKRSU has also been demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status as well as a separate Kamatapur state for the Rajbongshi people. Several previous appeals for the ST status and a separate state were turned down by the state government.

The Rajbongshi are one of the indigenous ethnic groups inhabiting parts of Assam, Meghalaya, northern West Bengal, and some pockets on the eastern parts of Nepal, Bihar, Bhutan and northern Bangladesh.
