Sivasagar:Lawmaker and prominent RTI activist of Assam, Akhil Gogoi received a hero's welcome in his constituency Sivasagar, during his maiden visit after bagging a historic election victory. On Thursday, the Guwahati-based special National Investigating Agency (NIA) court acquitted Gogoi from all charges framed against him due to lack of evidence. After he was released from the prison in Guwahati, Gogoi visited bereaved parents of Sam Stafford, the minor boy who was killed in the police firing during an anti-CAA protest in December 2019 in Guwahati.
People carrying traditional Assamese Gamocha were seen standing on the roadside from Guwahati to Sivasagar to welcome him. Sources close to Gogoi informed that the Sivasagar MLA is likely to spend few days in the constituency before leaving for Guwahati to take part in the Budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly scheduled to be held on July 12. Gogoi was arrested by Assam Police in December 2019 for his alleged involvement in the violent protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and for his alleged links with the Maoists.
